How about a visit to the Heimatmuseum Hüsli (featured in the TV Series "Schwarzwald-Klinik") to discover more about the Black Forest's history and heritage. Gardeners will enjoy a visit to the the Schwarzwälder Ziebrunnen und Gartenmöbel-Hersteller (makers of decorative fountains and garden furniture) at Bonndorf-Wellendingen. Visit the Triberg Waterfalls, discover the Clock Industry, the Vogtsbauernöfe (traditional old Black Forest farms). Visit sophisticated Zürich with its own lake and old city centre, bristling with boutiques, antique and souvenir shops, or spend a day in Basle, and visit the Zoo. Lucerne, two hours away by car, has a fascinating old town and Transport Museum. Then there's the Bodensee - Lake Constance -, the nearby Feldberg (at 1493 meters, the highest peak in the Black Forest and excellent ski centre, convenient for both Schluchsee and Titisee. Then there's the local "Capital", Freiburg, with its beautifully-preserved medieval centre. Have a coffee in the Market Square or switch off under a shady tree at one of the many Biergartens. Freiburg never fails to provide something for every taste! All these destinations can be easily reached on a day-trip.

Especially recommendable: A day at the Bodensee (Lake Constance) .... if you have time, include a visit to the Islands Reichenau or Mainau, with its magnificent gardens and Butterfly Pavilion. Or explore Friedrichshafen, Meersburg or Radolfszell. The small towns at Überlingen, Rohrschach and Romanshorn are worth a mention, and - on the way there or back - don't leave out Stein am Rhein or Europe's tallest waterfall at Schaffhausen. On the outward trip from Schluchsee to Lake Constance, look out for the three peaks at Hohentwiel, Hohenkrähen and Hohentwiel, relics of former volcanic activity. |
